Monday : 31st July

Bro got up early and I had to get up too to close the door.. almost immediately, I switched the computer on and checked for ppl online.. I passed on the message to folks back home to sign in and had a nice long talk with them over yahoo… They were too glad that they could communicate with me even when I was all alone at home..

After a nice long session on the computer, I decided to explore the neighborhood.. I went on to the apartment office first and paid them the rent check.. they greeted me well and accepted the check.. I then paid a visit to the gym and was glad to reduce 100 calories over the treadmill.. after a nice long walk over the place, I returned back home.. This was followed by another first time.. I learnt how to use the laundry machines in the basement.. and was glad over my achievement.. at the same time .. glad that finally.. i had proved a little useful to my bro.. I got back home and spent a lot of time over the computer…

Then I decided to get my hands on some cooking and tried some dal and microwave rice.. although the process turned out to be a disaster, the product wasn’t that bad.. I ate it heartily and got back to the computer.. the rest of afternoon was spent chit chatting and before it was too long, brother dropped in home…

He was not too glad over the idea of going out, since he had a tough and tiring day at office, so we decided to order the pizza and buffalo wings home.. (though they spell buffalo wings, they are just plain chicken !!! ) we watched corporate and after that, retired to bed…

Tuesday : 1st August

Again got up with brother and then straight over to the computer, chatting with ppl back home and friends for quite some time.. That was followed by the gym session and I increased the calorie loss to 150 today.. !!! satisfied but exhausted, I returned back home.. and again, had a nice long session on the computer… Thank God, brother has a laptop for me !!! what would I have done without a computer !!!

The only other new thing that i learnt in the day was to use the vaccum cleaner that was lying under the bed.. I surely surprised my bro by cleaning up the carpet all over the house.. dunno when he had done it last !!!

This was followed by lunch comprising of some sabji which bro had prepared, chapattis and rice and dal which was lying in the refrigerator … after a stomach full breakfast, I had another talk with folks and then went for some afternoon nap.. I slept for a little too long and got up with bro knocking the door (god knows how ppl manage without doorbells)

Bro sure had a surprise for me.. he asked me to get ready as soon as possible.. I was invited over dinner by his bosses… what a pleasant surprise.. !!! well.. I got dressed soon and bro drove me to his office.. it was nice to meet his seniors.. and even more .. the way they greeted me.. we then left in one of his bosses car to go to the restaurant.. the car was a convertible.. another first time for me.. and I just loved it..

The place where we went to was some Hams Restaurant.. it was a cool place and all my bro s bosses were in the best of their moods.. I had heard from bro as to how they boozed.. and I got to see it today too.. They ordered buffalo wings as a side dish.. they tasted awesome.. fantastic.. they were irresistable.. and soon.. we ordered so many of those that our side dish became our main course too !!! That was followed by a burger.. and lots of chit chatting.. finally around 11 in the night.. we decided to get back.. We got back home and after a round of ice creams.. dropped on the bed.. dead asleep…

By the time we left the office, it was 5 PM.. we did not have lunch that day so decided to munch something. We went to KFC.. another first experience for me… and this indeed taught me a lot of interesting things… first and foremost.. the chicken was excellent.. oily.. but just too good.. Next… well.. if u buy one drink.. you get as many refills for free. After we were done.. we just picked up our glasses and filled them up so that we could sip from them on the way.

Then we drove to the Haynes Mall.. The place was too huge, beyond what I could ever imagine. Although we stuck to window shopping, as this was more of a collection of branded stuff, than a general mall.. Things were pretty expensive but I had a good time trying to grasp as to how big could a mall get.. After some time, we decided that we had seen enough.. and it was time to go to a place where we could buy stuff too.. and then came the name that I ve heard the most … Wallmart

As I entered wallmart, I again was lost in the magnanimity of things… Bro was busy telling me tales as to how, manufacturers designed their products as per wallmarts requirements.. into wallmart and I spent the next hour just goin to different sections checking out all that they had on display.. but I am sure, in that 1 hour, I didn’t even see one fourth of that place.. after that, I actually started buying stuff both for my weeks stay with bro and to carry to Pittsburgh.

After experiencing this, I was too tired to go any other place.. we decided to go back home and have a quick dinner.. we did have lots of stuff packed in the refrigerator to suffice for our dinner.. we made plans for the next day and then went to bed..

As per what we had decided, we woke up early next morning.. early as in 8 AM.. !!! still.. it took us almost 10 30 to leave.. We had to hurry up to catch up with the Mc Donald breakfast. Well, I must say it was too filling. I experienced pancakes with maple syrup for the first time and loved it.. there were some scrambled eggs, a biscuit and some roasted potato which bro had ordered.. !!! it was too filling and I decided not to take any lunch.. then we set off to the concord mall, charlotte, which was almost an hour and a half away..

The free way, the cars.. trucks.. the boats which were towed to the trucks on way to the lake .. it was all too new to me.. and I couldn’t help but stare at each passing vehicle…

We reached concord and found some parking with great difficulty.. After getting inside, we were again confused as to what to do.. so after a bit of window shopping, we decided to watch a movie.. I had an argument with my bro over which movie to watch.. he insisted on some horror / thriller while I stuck to a comedy.. he cursed me but finally took the tickets for the comedy movie..

We did roam around in the mall till the showtime and purchased some Tshirts for my brother. After that came the movie and I had to apologize at the end of it coz the movie was a sad mushy comedy… a very wrong movie for me and my brother to see together.. We then visited the bass pro shops.. they were a collection of shops which sold everything related to hunting.. we indeed had an excellent time there and clicked quite a few snaps… then we picked up a milkshake and started our return journey.. needless to say.. both were too exhausted..

The plan to order a pizza in the night didn’t quite work out since I had upset my tummy by overeating so we stuck to some home made food.. before retiring to bed..

So that was how the weekend went.. and i was sure.. things were gonna be very different from the next day…

goooooood morning America !!! for the first time in my life… got up with a slight throat pain.. natural after the icecreams that i had yesterday… never ever did i have so many in a single day !!! bro was fast asleep and i didnt want to wake him up… since itz not too many days that he gets such a sound sleep… well.. the first thing i realized in the morning was…after the goooooood nights sleep… you kinda tend to forget all that has happened in immediate past… i got up… wondering how come i wasnt home… n in a fraction of a second… recollected… it had been quite some time since i had said gooood bye to all folks back home… and a new phase of my life had begun… i got too excited to go back to sleep… but the only thing that was forcing me to do so was the air conditioner… so i shut it off.. and decided to say a good morning to the only familiar thing in this unknown country…. THE COMPUTER !!!!!

Went online .. checked emails… met quite some ppl online… and all were too keen on knowing my experiences.. so decidced to post some emails….

Bro woke up some time soon… and we did have my first proper american breakfast… toast peanut butter and jelly… we call that bread butter jam… !!! but ya.. one good thing was… I loved the peanut butter jam… n that told me.. i surely wasnt gonna starve in this country… we made some hot indian tea… and then came the bigger relief… u get good indian tea in stores here.. and so thats surely not a problem.. all that i had read of.. getting used to american tea was proved wrong… well.. howver i cant say the same abt coffee… sometime after the breakfast was done.. i decided to make some coffee myself.. and bro instructed me on how to operate the coffee maker… and make some “American Coffee” … well.. a few attempts at this in lufthansa had made me kinda used to this… though itz not that i lllllloooooved it.. but i ve learnt one thing… for some essential things in life… u have to force urself to enjoy them… to survive.. and once u start enjoyin… life rrrrrrocks.. well.. looking at the kinda equipment in bro s kitchen.. i frankly wouldnt mind spending my whole day there.. making all the dishes that i d learnt over these days…

Hey.. so last i wrote was the airplane i guess… well.. towards the end of the journey… we were given 2 forms to fill up.. one for the customs… other for the immigration…. n the normal problem.. customs form had a section of whether u are carrying food items… entering no was scary since… it they dared to open the bag.. all that could be seen was just food items.. n sayin a yes was even more scary… since they had mentioned that it was restricted (though not prohibited..) .. at that point.. yes seemed atleast a better option ( they would throw the items out in worst case… but if we lied.. we could be thrown out instead)

anyways.. what happened later made all this look ridiculous…

I took emails and contacts of my in flight friends.. we got glimpses of north carolina from the plane… and it was just a jungle… just a dense jungle.. with cities in between.. !!! any ways.. after the plane landed .. came another fantastic moment… my first foot on the land of my dreams.. america.. !!! well… though.. didnt have too much time to think.. since the air crew seemed to hurry us out . we reached the immigration.. and the officer just asked me the purpose of visit.. and the exact course details etc etc… and i very very politely gave the details… well.. she was glad to let me in without any questions which was unexpected… then i reached the baggage collection area… just prayin that i find mine… it did come for sure.. but all my attempts to hurry up were wasted.. since my baggage came out last… then came the customs… well.. i did nothign right there.. the officer instructed me to stand in a particular queue… i stood in the one meant for US citizens.. then i was again directed to the right place… but to my surprise… i was asked nothing much .. just whether i had read abt the restricted and prohibited items on the list.. and when i said yes,.. wheter i was carrying any of them… no.. sure.. yes.. go.. .. out there was another lady… who just again said.. how u doing !!! wow.. !!! i imagined how silly would someone look standing at Mumbai airport.. askin ppl how u doing.. !!! <!-- D(["mb","

well.. out of the terminal and i heaved a sigh of relief when i finally saw my bro.. he was too excited to see me … and we exchanged a nice warm hug.. well.. then we took the luggage and went to his car… GM s pontiac… fantastic car… my definitions of leg space changed with i could see enough space to stretch my legs… and then we hit the road… well.. wendys.. macdonalds.. everything.. n when bro could see me staring at them.. he judged that i was hungry… and drove to wendys… where we picked up a burger.. some fries.. and a huuuuuuuuuge icecream… and again.. hit the freeway… this is where i saw a all together new drivin experience.. seemed as if.. there were those mumbai pune types expressways all over USA… well.. immediately i could imagine the entire US as a network of freeways with exits for different cities… we drove a long way.. checked out bro s client company.. and finally.. approached winston salem.. where bro stayed…\n

Hey, some minor turbulence and we have been asked to put our seat belts on. This is kinda scary but i guess.. nothing majorly wrong. Just finished watching the movie cheaper by the dozen after a nice long sleep.

US airways sucks bigtime. Itz kinda scary since it is a precursor to the things to come. Everything here is for sale. They have got a fantastic TV and video on demand system but they have the headphones on sale. They have got all possible drinks on display, but that’s for sale too. Only orange juice is for free. On top of all this, even air hostesses are all old. I really feel bad to ask them for help.. Why trouble the aged… I feel like telling them ” Please have a seat , I ll serve myself”.. Damn.. this is so sick..

To make things worse, when it was lunch time, the airhostess kept a Hindu veg meal in front of me. I knew this since dad had informed me abt it. But he had assured me that a hindu veg meal would have some chicken. All this while, I was wondering how, but my worst fears were confirmed when I checked out the contents. There was some rice with some green vegetables over it and some other vegetables on side which I was looking at for the first time ever. And that too.. green ..!!! apart from that.. there were cut vegetables and fruits mixed and marinated in some sour sauce… yuck… and.. !! that’s it !!! n I looked at the plate of the person next to me.. chicken… chocolate mousse.. toblerone.. some other chocolates… damn.. what wrong did I do in life.. that god had to do this to me ?? vegetables and me !!! I tried negotiating with the airhostess abt giving me a chicken meal but aunty was too polite to tell me, this is what u ordered sir and this is what u get.. Finally my eyes drifted to the Andhra guy sitting next to me… he didn’t know what pasta was.. but just that he insisted it should be veg.. so the airhostess gave him that plate..

What I noticed was that the guy was not interested in eating the chocolate mousse and he was leaving it unopened. Immediately, I found a friend in him . I introduced myself first and immediately said next – can I have that please… He sure did let me have it all gladly… after finishing it off, I decided that I should talk a little more to him.. courtesy sake so got some info abt him and the girl sitting next to him. She was an innocent gal who was a south Indian from Chennai with roots in pune.. The funniest part was when she claimed that she was a maharashtrian .. in a south Indian accent… !!! She was so scared of the plane food that she refused to eat anything.. Just took a good day and started munching on that. I was once tempted to ask her to take a chicken plate when lunch was offered to her.. and give it to me, but then.. the little shame that was left in me prevented me from doing this.. also I remembered dad and others yelling at me to take care of my ever increasing weight and tummy and I thought the airhostess was a gods own way of asking me to reduce chicken and chocolates.. After lotz of problems, finally the US Airways inflight video started. After my nice long nap, I finally had some nice time watching the movie..

Hey.. the turbulence or whatever it was is over now, seat belt signs are off.. and ya.. just remembered.. i guess i should atleast ask my friends .. their name and contact.. courtsey sake.. so i ll do that soon…

Hey.. some announcement, we have to fill up some forms of I 94 for immigration and some other form for US Customs. I ll have to stop writing this for now.. I guess landing is nearing too so probably, my next blog will be from America. Bye…

Hey.. I am seated and settled in US 193, waiting for takeoff after a rigorous security check on the Frankfurt airport. I ll update you with all that happened in this time.

After a long wait, we finally moved to the gate C 06 just to be told that the departure gate was changed to C 08. We started rushing our way to the new gate, cursing the officials in hindi for telling this to us so late, knowing though that It was our own mistake not to ask for this long. Still, long time to go as it was an hour to take off.

After going through the preliminary security, I was interrogated by some US Airways official. After checking my documents and after confirming and grinning that I was carrying extra luggage, she asked me to move to the other counter. Here, I encountered the official who just checked my passport and gave me the boarding ticket. Then we finally entered the C 8 waiting area and waited for the announcements to be made.

Finally there was an announcement and we all queued up for boarding. The only difference here was that there were a lot of Americans around and a very few Indians. I prayed hard that atleast this time, someone interesting should sit beside me. But as always, Murphy had things his way. My friend got a American chick next to him but when I was waiting with bated breath, Some south Indian guy from Andhra turned up and occupied the seat next to me. Sad sad sad..

After that came another eventful moment. For the first time, I changed my watch to American Timing. Finally, something made me realize that life was changing. Any way, I can hear some announcement and it says that the takeoff is due anytime now. The airhostess has already given me angry looks so I better stop writing. I ll get back to u later.

“Travel Value – The Duty Free Shop” : That’s where I am right now, waiting for my connecting flight, having nothing better to do and so, continuing this blog.

I ll start from where I left last.. After that attempt to write a blog on board, I dozed off for some time, thanks to the good breakfast I had. What was pleasing was, this sleep could help me escape the jet lag as it was early morning back in India. I got up in about 2 hours only to find a movie being put up, and to my surprise, it was Taxi No 9 2 11.. Hindi !!!! wow.. I feared it would be some English movie and that I would have to go back to sleep but well, this movie was enough to keep me wide awake. I didn’t know how the next two hours passed by, and at the end of it, they started displaying the landing signs… Excitement again crept in as I started lookin outside the window for my first sight of a foreign land. This is the moment when u always get to see the unexpected. Well, dunno why the thought of foreign land always brings tall buildings and all hi-tech stuff in front of our eyes, from what I could see, it was lotz of greenery with lakes all over.

After some time, the plane landed and I was all set with luggage, ready to exit the plane so that I could complete whatever the formalities at earliest. However, amidst the hurry, suddenly a wave of excitement passed through my body as I realized that I was gonna set my feet for the first time in my life on a foreign soil. However, this excitement was short lived as I soon realized that the airport was too huge and I had to find my next terminal soon.

The information desk lead me to a so called “train” to take me from one terminal to another.. The train started and picked up speed so quickly that I almost fell down. Finally in a few mins, I reached my destination and it felt as if I had reached a different airport. In this process, I made a new friend. A chap who was traveling by the same route… So we started the hunt for the correct terminal - Gate C 06 together.

After a lot of inquiry and following the signs, I finally reached my Gate C 06. When we tried to enter the waiting area, we were driven out since it was 3 hours to go for our flight. I decided to take a look around the place, but I couldn’t keep the luggage with anyone and so, roaming around with all this surely was a pain. The only thing I felt which was worth visiting around was the duty free shop..

My initial interest in the duty free shop was to chk out the prices. After getting a hang of it, I entered into the liquor section. They had an amazing collection of the best stuff from all over the world. The brands and names just heard from friends in conversations were all in front of me and God !!! what shapes and kinds of bottles.. !!! The only thing that drove me out of that section was the feeling that if I by mistake bumped into that delicate rack with the luggage I was carrying, and if those bottles crashed down on me, I could so very easily lose out on the entire amount that I was carrying with me. But well, I ll not forget this ever, what a sight !! yet something told me.. this was just the begening.

I had convinced myself that I ll carry some momento from that place but when I explored the rest of the store and checked out the prices, I dropped that idea. However, finally I actually found something apt to carry as a momento. Something so apt. Well, I picked up a price list which was available for free and had the cost of all the items for sale. It will not just remind me of the place, but also of why I did not pick up anything from there.

Out of the store and my friend and I found a place to sit. Ever since that time, we are seated there, just staring at the passengers, sure having a great time though. Too amused at the fact that human beings exist in such varied forms too. Quite a treat for my eyes, but I guess, from what I ve heard of the USA, I wont find such a treat there.

It really is amusing to see such different kinds of people, their way of talking, walking, addressing others. Some thing that interested me the most was a stout black lady walkin with a thin white guy n 3 very cute black kids following them. I could just look at this and smile. I am just trying to absorb everything that was happening around me right now. I however conclude that some rules are globally true:

Kids all over this planet are really cute, irrespective of their country

Babes are always accompanied by lame people and somehow you land up getting frustrated looking at their good luck

The signal to keep the seat belt fastened has just gone off and so here I begin my blog on board – LH 757. I cant really express how I am feeling at this moment, but the best I can say is, kinda sad after saying a goodbye to all the folks back in India, kinda excited over being in an international flight for the first time in my life, staring here and there at everything like a newborn baby.. and ofcourse , a lot more curious over everything that is yet to come.. But first, let me brief you on the good bye drama…

It was 10 in the night and I still had all my stuff scattered all over the place.. I made some hasty phone calls to friends asking them to come a little late as I needed to get done with all this chaos before they arrived. I was in a big mess and cursed myself over not beginning with the packing a little early, though let me tell you, how much ever early you start, you are bound to reach this same state. Amidst this mess were the phone calls ringing to wish me a happy journey.. and I could not turn down any of those.. My neighbor came to meet me and give his best wishes and that again took some more time.. also, there were too many last minute additions to the luggage and it was bothering me too.. Finally, I was over with all the packing and told myself, whatever was remaining could be sent with someone later… but no more packing. But before I could take my bath.. my friends arrived.. I hurried up with the other chores and joined them. They were all prepared and had come with a cake.. it really helped to lift the mood.. All at home also got involved in the cake cutting and we had a party of sorts before we finally set out..

At the airport, I was with dad s friend who was gonna be with me till the final security check. He insisted that we enter and complete the boarding formalities even before my friends reached. I agreed reluctantly as I was scared at the prospect of not getting to come out and meet them.. since they had come down this far to say a good bye to me. Done with the boarding and the mighty task of baggage checking and collecting some forex, I tried to move out of the airport and to my shock, something had gone wrong somewhere and I was not being allowed to come out.. After a lot of pleading, I finally heaved a sigh of relief as I was allowed to come out.. I was just praying to avoid any emotional drama here and fortunately, there was none. I guess, my parents are even more strong and immune to such things than I am. My mom was more worried about me missing the immigration and security than emotional abt sayin a good bye.. I had a photo session.. and then some hungama with friends.. bhouji had come down to the airport too to bid me a good bye.. so had chat with him too.. dad was looking too excited abt me going.. n he too was cheerfully getting involved in the conversation with friends… and mom.. angry that I wasn’t getting over with all this and moving in for the immigration and security.. so I was assured.. no emotional drama.. I m lucky my mom doesn’t watch the K serials other wise I m sure she would have wept..

So moving on, I went to the immigration counter, submitted the form and that was done, no one asked me any questions, no declaring anything. I moved to security, had one last talk with parents on the cell phone that the fellow accompanying me was carrying and then bid a good bye to him too. At security , all went smooth except when I removed my jacket, the coins in my pocket were all over the place and the security guard had a hearty laugh.

Done with security, I moved to my correct terminal gate and waited for the boarding announcement.. and as any other smart Indian, stood very close to the gate from where I had to get in. Unfortunately, the airline ppl were smarter, they let ppl go only in a specific order and with due respect to Murphy, I was in the last lot to climb in.

It took quite some time for all the security checks to get over and the aircraft finally showed some signs of motion. Murphy struck yet again with the place next to me being empty. With a reflex thought, I initially thought, probably someone will board at the next station. It took some time for me to realize that ok, there was no next station coming and no one was gonna board mid air.

Lufthansa was comfortable, airhostess were cute (though the executive class got the cutest ones compared to the economy). Then it was dinner time. They served me some unidentifiable stuff which i bravely consumed. The only thing that I knew was that it had some chicken and that was enough for me to eat it gladly.

Done with the dinner, it was 4 AM Indian time, time for some sleep. Though , I could hardly sleep. I got up around 6 AM coz of lights being switched on and they were serving breakfast. Man .. !!! these ppl are fast.. a 2 hour break between lunch and breakfast !!! It was some fantastic irresistible food though. I guess, after this satisfying breakfast, I felt like noting down this first experience of an international flight and so, I picked up the notebook from my handbag and started writing this account.. and so .. here I am, Saurabh Wagh, reporting on board LH 757

With the metrological department predicting heavy to very heavy rains in Mumbai for today, I had put my umbrella aside.. and made plans for a bright sunny day today, going by the past records of the MET department. However, when its not your day, even the MET departments predictions turn true.

After staying up late night for a football match to which India was nowhere closely related, I got up pretty early coz of the heavy downpour. One gaze outside the window and I realized that today was gonna be my third consequitive day at home. Just to lift my mood up, i decided to call a few football crazy friends to boast about the great itallian victory… However, all these attempts to feel better were washed away in the heavy downopour..

The rest of the day was spent in watching the news, getting updates on the sorry state of the city.. and wondering whats wrong with the weather. Sleep.. Food.. Chat.. Food.. Sleep.. that was all that i did till late afternoon.

However, I woke up from my afternoon nap with a pleasant surprise.. The rains had finally stopped and it was a welcome change.. I immediately made up a plan to do some shopping.. N so set off from my home.. It was a nice experience.. to find not too much of traffic on the road.. but then.. hardly did any shopping.. Nevertheless.. got a satisfactory feeling that I achieved something in the day..

Well.. the evening was the most productive.. with me finally sorting out this website thing.. designing pages.. figuring out how to change its order.. and now.. writing my first blog.. Though this blog is pretty useless.. It gives my website .. the first complete look.. although.. this look will change drastically in the days to come.. but now.. i can atleast proudly say…

Welcome to Saurabh Wagh s Home Page
